¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction Raises more than $1 Million
Funds Raised at the 29th Annual ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction Funds Ongoing COVID-19 Screening and Treatment for Vineyard Workers
Portland, Ore. (November 17, 2020) — ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction raised more than one million dollars during its 2020 virtual fundraising events. The 29th annual fundraising season included the Summertime E-Auction from July 14 to 16 and the just-completed November Auction, which spanned November 9 through 16. Both events were bolstered by ongoing fundraising efforts during an especially challenging year for vineyard workers and their families. In total, ¡Salud! raised $1,021,581 in 2020.
Thirty-six winemakers comprising ¡Salud!’s Vintners Circle auctioned a 2019 Pinot Noir, each sourced and blended especially for the auction. In lieu of a walk-around tasting event, ¡Salud! expanded the reach of winemakers and its mission by hosting a six-part series of virtual winemaker panels November 9 through 11. Hosted by Brian Bushlach, ¡Salud!’s Winemaker Conversations were attended by bidders and wine lovers across the country. In these sessions, winemakers shared their impressions of the 2019 vintage, tasting notes on their special cuvées, their personal experiences with ¡Salud!, and the organization’s impact on the winemaking community. The sessions can be heard on the Vintage podcast here.
A Live/Silent Auction took place virtually November 13 through 16, offering unique wine packages from Oregon and beyond, one-of-a-kind wine experiences, and more. Example lots included a collection of 36 large format bottles of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, one from each member of the Vintners Circle; a custom-etched wine barrel bar featuring the ¡Salud! logo plus 12 bottles of library ¡Salud! Cuvée Pinot Noir; a week-long wine country escape with private house stays and tasting experiences at both Stoller Family Estate and Chehalem Winery.
On Saturday, November 14, ¡Salud! hosted a one-hour livestream gala with the goal of raising funds for a second mobile unit. The live hosts presented video testimonials and interviews with winemakers Rollin Soles (ROCO), Kate Payne-Brown (Stoller), and Gary Horner (Erath), ¡Salud!’s medical team, and a patient who received treatment while battling COVID-19. During a special appeal, ¡Salud! raised more than $360,000, reaching their goal of purchasing a second medical unit, an opportunity to double ground covered and communities supported.
Funds raised during the annual auction provide direct support for ¡Salud! and its clinical service team. Under guidance and with support of OHSU Health Hillsboro Medical Center, ¡Salud! has responded to the ongoing global health crisis among vineyard workers and their families, providing care and essential resources for Hispanic and LatinX communities. The organization is entirely reliant on philanthropy and the support of the wine community.

This year, in light of the current pandemic we are taking ¡Salud! online! Oregon Wine Auction Raises More than One Million Dollars for Vineyard Worker Healthcare
Funds Raised at Annual ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction Fills a Healthcare Void for Vineyard Workers and Their Families
Portland, Ore. (November 12, 2019) — ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction raised more than one million dollars during its annual auction this weekend. The 28th annual included two sold-out events: the Big Board Auction on Friday, November 8 at Ponzi Vineyards, and the Grand Dinner and Live Auction Gala on Saturday, November 9 at Domaine Serene. Presented by sponsor O’Brien Construction & Open Concept Architecture, ¡Salud! raised $1,060,971 in 2019.
Forty winemakers in the Vintners Circle poured special 2018 cuvées made for ¡Salud! during Friday’s Big Board Auction, while live bidding took place concurrently. Single 12-bottle cases of Beaux Frères and Penner-Ash Wine Cellars ¡Salud! Cuvée sold for $3,200 each, and many others sold for more than $2,000 a case. New for 2019, bidders without a ticket to the events in Oregon wine country could register for an ePaddle to bid remotely, adding even more excitement to the auction. In total, the Big Board Auction raised $217,375.
On Saturday, guests gathered at Domaine Serene for the Live Auction and Gala, which kicked off with a walk-around tasting of wines from the Vintners Circle. Live auction lots included singular wine experiences and collections: a four-night stay at Château de la Crée in the Côte d’Or, a week with Beck Family Estates in South Africa, a 32-bottle French/Oregon collection of wines from Willamette Valley wineries with Burgundian ties, a 69-bottle lot of Oregon sparkling wine, and much more. A simultaneous silent auction offered a lot comprised of six rare magnums from Big Table Farm, an Italian cheese and sausage-making class at Montinore Estate, a 24-bottle ¡Salud! Cuvée vertical from 2001 to 2009, and other unique opportunities.
The 2019 Legacy Winemaker Award winner was presented to Lynn Penner-Ash of Penner-Ash Wine Cellars. The annual award acknowledges exemplary contributions to the wine industry and dedicated support of the ¡Salud! mission. An industry trailblazer, Penner-Ash was one of the first female winemakers in Oregon and has been a champion of ¡Salud! since its inception in 1992. Penner-Ash also introduced the Legacy Winemaker Lot: a long weekend at The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana with Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash.
The Live Auction crested with a moving speech by EstellaOrtiz-Nino, a nurse-in-training who grew up alongside the ¡Salud! program. The daughter of migrant workers and ¡Salud! patients, Ortiz-Nino was exposed to its services and team from an early age. Her drive to succeed, coupled with encouragement and guidance from her parents and ¡Salud!’s committed staff, compelled her to pursue a career that could give back to the community.
“I’m becoming a nurse to be part of the solution,” explained Ortiz-Nino. “Let’s continue to be that voice that targets cost of care, decreases hospitalization visits and stays, improves health literacy, quality and access to care.”
Funds raised at the 2019 auction will directly benefit OHSU Tuality Healthcare and ¡Salud!’s worksite wellness clinics, dental and optical services, comprehensive health screenings and education, year-round case management and financial assistance. ¡Salud!’s care teams also support families in navigating a complicated healthcare system, without the barriers of cost, transportation, and language. With ¡Salud!, Oregon is the only state in the country with a program designed to support the health needs of seasonal vineyard workers and their families.
More than 40 participating wineries in the Willamette Valley, named the ¡Salud! Vintners Circle, produce a custom, single lot Pinot Noir cuvée for the auction every year.
The auction thanks this year’s ¡Salud! Vintners Circle: 00 Wines, Adelsheim Vineyard, Alexana Winery, Amalie Robert Estate, Archery Summit, Ayoub, Beaux Frères, Bethel Heights Vineyard, Big Table Farm, Brittan Vineyards, Chehalem Winery, Cramoisi Vineyard, Cristom Vineyards, Domaine Drouhin Oregon, Domaine Roy & fils, Domaine Serene, Dukes Family Vineyards, Dusky Goose, Elk Cove Vineyards, Erath Winery, Hamacher Wines, Hyland Estates, LAVINEA, Montinore Estate, Patricia Green Cellars, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, Ponzi Vineyards, Purple Hands Winery, Rain Dance Vineyards, R. Stuart & Co., Résonance, ROCO Winery, Shea Wine Cellars, Soter Vineyards, St. Innocent Winery, Stoller Family Estate, Trisaetum, Twomey Cellars, WillaKenzie Estate, and Winderlea Vineyard & Winery.
The 2020 auction will take place November 13 and 14, 2020.
About ¡Salud!
¡Salud! is a project of OHSU Tuality Healthcare, working to address the hurdles faced by vineyard workers and their families in meeting their basic healthcare needs. The project serves approximately 2,500 vineyard workers and family members each year, providing comprehensive health screenings through the ¡Salud! Each November, ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction is held in support of these services, bringing together winemakers and wine lovers for a two-day auction of some of Oregon’s finest Pinot Noir, produced exclusively for the event.
